Hi, I am Gillain, founder and owner of The Lust Label – a women’s fashion and style house designed to bring you brave, bold and beautiful designs.
I have always had a keen interest in fashion growing up, but my friends would most definitely describe me as either full glam or basically looking homeless (standard right?!). I’m either dressed to the nines or my hairs in a sweaty gym bun with my trackies and husband’s jumper.
On a walk one evening with my husband, after listening to a few podcasts about women and their entrepreneurial journey, I realised that we had a lot in common. I was hard working, driven, ambitious and resilient. Many of these women had left comfortable full-time well-paying careers to pursue their dream jobs, so why couldn’t I? For so long I had been complacent in admiring the stories of others instead of writing my own.
Don’t get me wrong a lot of entrepreneurs will tell you they started their business because they hated their day job, this is not the case for me. I genuinely enjoyed working in human resources but what it started to lack was that fire in my belly that got me jumping out of bed every morning.
I started to feel trapped in a really vicious cycle of monotony and I knew it was time for change when I started living for the weekend.
During this walk I floated the idea to my husband and pretty much said “don’t call me crazy, but what do you think of this” he has always been my biggest supporter and didn’t seem shocked at all that I wanted to follow something else I was passionate about.
As the great motivator Tony Robbins once said
As soon as I got home I began to research and I came across the textiles and clothing expo being held in 3 weeks. What a perfect opportunity to get a feel for the industry! In the blink of an eye my ticket was booked and I was off!
Although it was extremely overwhelming for a newbie (it was a huge exhibition) it instantly gave me butterflies at the thought of pursing this. Ok, it could have been the insane vibe that these types of expos give off but I am pretty sure it was genuinely because I knew I had found my mojo again, and I could not wipe the smile of my face! All these wonderful ideas came flooding to my brain about style, fashion, designs and I started to envision what this could look like and how I could achieve it.
It was at that moment that I realised I wanted to have this same feeling every day, I wanted to be excited to get up and do something I was passionate about, as cliché as it is you know the old saying “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”.
I’m certainly not afraid of hard work in fact I was putting 110% into my day job in HR everyday but this was different, I could celebrate every little win with The Lust Label because it was mine and every little milestone had only been achieved because of the hard work and effort I had dedicated to it 24/7.
So here we are nearly 8 months down the track and although it’s been an extremely challenging journey that’s involved hours and hours of hard work as well as pure love and dedication, I don’t have a single regret because to leave you with one more cliché quote “what if I fall? Oh, but my darling what if you fly”.
